Infant Baptism
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14)
It is great that you are considering your child(ren) ‘s spiritual journey and formation and are thinking about baptism.
What is Baptism?
At its heart, Christian baptism is a visible symbol of God's grace to a person, through faith in Jesus. The water represents the spiritual reality of how Jesus cleanses a person of sin, offering forgiveness and new eternal life as an adopted member of God’s family. More than just a personal experience, baptism is a public declaration of active faith and an intentional commitment to being part of the church community—a family in which both the individual and the congregation make serious promises before God to support each other in living out that faith.
Do we Baptise Infants?
Yes. When we baptise infants, it represents the child being welcomed into the family of God. Because infants cannot make these declarations themselves, parents, godparents, and the congregation step forward to make solemn promises before God. Together, they commit to actively nurturing, teaching, and raising the child within the ongoing life, love, and fellowship of the church.
Because baptism is an expression of this shared, active faith, it is designed for families who are already regularly attending and participating in our church life.
A Service of Thanksgiving
While infant baptism is for parents who already have an active faith and are regular members of our church community, we completely understand that every family's spiritual journey looks different. If you feel you aren't quite ready to make the promises required in baptism, we would be delighted to offer a Service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child. This service is a wonderful opportunity to gather with your loved ones in the cathedral to thank God for the arrival of your little one, pray for their future, and celebrate the joy of family, without the formal requirements of baptism.
